These 5 foods to avoid in case of osteoarthritis

Degenerative cartilage disease, osteoarthritis, or chronic degenerative arthropathy, is manifested by often intense pain in the joints (hands, wrist, knees, hips, etc.), making certain movements difficult.

To relieve the symptoms, several drug treatments are available. However, to limit the progression of this pathology which affects nearly 10 million people in France, it is also advisable to monitor your diet.

Cold cuts and red meat

The leading cause of functional disability for people over 40, osteoarthritis is an inflammatory reaction in the joint due to the wear and tear of the cartilage. It is therefore advisable to limit foods that cause inflammation, such as cold meats and red meat. These foods are very acidifying, rich in salt and saturated fatty acids, which weaken the cartilage in the joints. They also contain an omega 6 involved in triggering joint inflammation: arachidonic acid.

Vegetable oils

Because they are a source of omega-6, pro-inflammatory polyunsaturated fatty acids, vegetable oils (sunflower, soybean, corn, rapeseed …), as well as margarine, are also to be banned from the plates if you suffer from osteoarthritis. Note that omega-6 fatty acids are also found in most nuts. To reduce the pain, it is advisable to opt for foods containing omega-3 fatty acids known for their anti-inflammatory action, such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna, etc.).

French fries and crisps

Also on the list of products not recommended are crisps and fries. And for good reason, these processed foods contain a lot of sodium and refined carbohydrates. Not to mention that they are cooked in oils rich in omega-6. However, as explained above, they promote inflammation. In summary, foods that are too fatty, salty, but also sweet, should be avoided when you have osteoarthritis.

Cookies and other sweets

This is why cookies, pastries, pastries, or even sweets are also among the foods that should not be included on the menu too regularly. Like saturated fat, sugar is a major inflammatory agent that increases arthritis pain. As part of an anti-arthritis diet, focus on fruits, and more particularly on red fruits, particularly known for their antioxidant properties.

White bread

White bread, but also white rice, white bread, rusks, and other refined cereals are not good allies in reducing symptoms because they stimulate the inflammatory response. We recommend products made from whole grains, such as grain bread and wholegrain pasta. In addition, these high glycemic index products can promote weight gain. However, overweight is one of the main risk factors for osteoarthritis and increases the level of pain experienced.
